(AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder affecting social communication and behaviour.

The diagnostic criteria for ASD were updated in the most recent iteration of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM 5) 2013 to reflect an increased awareness for how this issue can impact social functioning in particular.

Other changes included a re categorisation of the disorder into levels of impairment and the inclusion of Social Communication Disorder.

Despite the additional clarity that informs these changes, the reality is that every child with an ASD is unique with their own strengths and challenges.
